Square folio (36cm). Blue cloth, backed in black linen, titled in gilt on fronts and spines, top edges gilt; plain endpapers; vol. I: xx,365pp; vol. II: [xii],299pp; vol. III: xii,384pp; with 62 photogravures, 62 color plates, and 149 uncolored halftone plates, complete. Bookplates of previous owner in all three. A straight and sound set, cloth rubbed; spine slightly faded and rubbed, generally clean and solid, though with light toning throughout. Good Condition. Books are very large and heavy 13" X 14" X 3".John Guille Millais (1865-1931), son of Pre-Raphaelite painter John Everett Millais, was a wildlife artist known for the exactness of his illustrations. This work features detailed illustrations of an enormous range of mammals, from dormice to whales. (Millais in fact spent time with an Atlantic whaling fleet studying the latter.) Though some of the illustrations are vaguely macabre, depicting furs and skins, most are lively and charming.
